The upcoming Karate-Do Tournament will be on the 19th of November (Gojuken Kedah) and the 25th of November (Kedah Open). Coaches from both team had already express their readiness to bring SKA Kedah to achieve another medal haul in the coming tournament.

The seminar and the test were conducted by the founder of Shotoshinkai Karate-Do Malaysia & the Shibu-cho of International Seito Karate-Do Kenkyukai (I.S.K.K.) in Malaysia, Shihan Ridzuan Md. Zain 5th Dan (P.J.K, P.J.M) and assisted by Sensei Chepto Hj Sumadi 3rd Dan.

A total of 61 students and two coaches took part in the grading test including Sensei Hasnoal Hj Liwangsa, Sensei Alnadine Barri and a senior student (senpai) of Shotoshinkai Sabah, Abdullah Abd Halil.

In the afternoon, a KATA seminar was conducted by Shihan himself followed by a KUMITE seminar by Sensei Chepto Hj Sumadi, who also is the head coach of the Terengganu SUKMA Karate-Do Chief Instructor.

Before the end of the seminar, Shihan Ridzuan presented black belt diplomas to both Sensei Hasnoal and Sensei Alnadine along with Senpai Abdullah Abd Halil.

The Kedah Shotoshinkai Karate-Do Association (S.K.A Kedah) karate team was made up of the Kulim Shotoshinkai Karate-Do Club, Kelab Karate-Do Shotoshinkai Kedah (K.K.S.K) and the Royal Malaysia Police Force karate exponent. The three club was led by Sensei Rosdi (Kulim), Sensei Dzulkiflee (K.K.S.K) and Sensei Rosnan (PDRM).

The championship was held in Dewan Hindu Sabha, Kulim and was officiated by Datuk Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir. It was a collaboration event between the state Shito-Ryu Association, Kulim – Bandar Bharu District Karate Association and the State Sport Ministry. More than 400 exponent participated in the one day championship.

The grading was conducted in conjunction with the fulfillment of grading period of 3 month for every student. A total of 8 students took part in the event and recorded a 100% passing rate with 4 of the student get double promotion for their good performance and execution of syllabus elements. Chief Instructor of KKSK, Sensei Dzulkiflee Abdullah says overall he is happy with the performance of the students for the club 1st ever grading. He who was the instructor in charge for the grading with the absent of Shihan Ridzuan Md Zain, hopes that the students continue to work hard to improve their skills and ability before taking up the next grading.

Earlier today, Sensei Dzulkiflee presented the grading certificates for all the candidates after the training session alongside with the presentation of new belt for all who pass the grading. The grading certificates was endorsed by Shihan Ridzuan Md Zain and sealed with Shotoshinkai Karate Association (S.K.A) official seal.

Sensei Sulaiman Ismail, Chief Instructor for UUM Karate Team and Head Coach for the MASUM team was very happy with the overall performance. “Overall achievement for this year is better compared to last year’s MASUM and I am happy we have won medal in most of the categories we participated but there is still room for improvement and we will be working towards it”. Team manager Sensei Francis Chuah acknowledge that the team is performing but also realize that there is a heavy task ahead for the team. “There is still differences and gap between our team and other universities, both the male and female Kata squad is catching up and so does the female kumite team. However, we still lack of strong talent in the male kumite team. We need to work harder to search for new talents in the university when the new semester starts.” he added.

This is the 3rd year the Karate event was included in MASUM since it was introduced in 2009. UUM hosted and organized the 1st Karate event in MASUM UUM 2009 followed by UiTM Arau in MASUM UiTM 2010. Next year MASUM Karate event is rumoured to be held in UMS (Universiti Malaysia Sabah). However there is no official confirmation on the matter.
